South 47 Farm

"Is a chicken a sea creature?" - Cal, to the butcher at Whole Foods

Despite our best efforts to ensure that the boys understand where our food comes from, it seems the information hasn't stuck very well with Cal. Perhaps it's just that the version of a chicken Cal saw in the meat cooler more closely resembled a sea creature we see on the beach than any chicken he'd ever seen..

I decided to take the boys to visit a farm in the area we like, as much to avoid future embarrassment on my part as to educate them.

I recently finished reading Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. Because of this book, the topic of eating locally grown food is high in my consciousness and in what I talk to the boys about when we're shopping and cooking. The farm was a great way to integrate theory with practice...fun also!

Lecia, this post is very motivating! I need to do better with finding good local food.

It looks like the boys had a blast!
