Advent Calendar Ideas

One of our family's favorite holiday traditions is our advent calendar (purchased from Garnet Hill a couple of years ago and no longer available - here is what they have now). If you are looking for a quick, easy way to create a beautiful advent calendar, I saw this neat idea on Design Sponge last week. Here are some ideas to get you thinking about what little treats with which you can fill an advent calendar:

Creative:
Poem/limerick/haiku
Instructions for a magic trick
A joke
A small joke book

Crafty:
Glue sticks, markers, crayons, (colored) chalk
Beads to string
Materials to make an ornament
Small tablets/journals
Origami
Disposable camera
Stickers
Fun erasers/pencils

Nature:
Shells
sea glass
seeds
Pine cones
acorns
A beautiful rock

Activities:
Holiday cookie cutter, with the promise to make cookies
Coupons for special activities such as getting the tree, watching a movie, a tea party

Small toys:
Finger puppets
Harmonicas/kazoos/whistles
Marbles
Miniature cars/tops/toys
Small flip books

Ornament for the tree

This picture shows the numbered flaps. Cal is eager to get the calendar filled and hung!

The advent calendar is great! You're never too old;) This year I'm making my sister's calendar, and she's making mine. It's so much fun! It's mostly candy in there though;)

Hope you had a nice thanksgiving:)

My kids have always loved the countdown with their advent calender. We use to buy a religious one with chocolates-sweet and spiritual!

Those ideas are great - I have been totally stuck as to what I can fill mine with (trying to avoid chocolate.)

This is so helpful! I've been collecting things for mine for a while, and just ordered Nutcracker tickets to put in one day. It's hard to come up with that many great ideas and I appreciate the help. Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving!

That's cute! I love advent calendars, but this year I think we'll have to skip it.. 18 months is a little too young perhaps. Next year.

What an awesome calendar! And I love your suggestions for filling it with things other than candy. I never remember eating the chocolate in those things---I was always eager to open it in the morning, but then who wants to eat candy so early in the day? Maybe I was a weird kid...?

And I want to start a movement for adult advent calendars. Won't someone fill mine with chanel nail polish and starbucks gift cards? Who's with me here? :)
