My December List

What I'm loving right now...

Winter light. Alexi took this at 4:17pm a couple of days ago.

Lots of unstructured playtime (three snow days this week so far).

Holiday lights.

This little hummingbird that has been hanging in and around our house this week.

Snow and snowmen.

our beach path this afternoon

we don't get snow every winter!

This piece written by the head of Abbott's school: "I am reading this wonderful book by Ken Robinson called, Out of our Minds, Learning to be Creative. The first question Robinson asks is: Why is it so essential to promote creativity? He says that the national government, companies and many organizations are emphasizing as never before the essentials to promote creativity and the high price of failure. What is involved in promoting creativity and what does it mean? Robinson discusses whether or not everyone is creative or just a selected few. He asks if creativity can be developed and, if so, what can organizations do immediately to make the most of their creative resources. What are the benefits of success?

Robinson states that creativity often is seen as purely individual performance. It comes from people who just happen to be creative, who may wear jeans and don’t wear ties. However, in his book, Robinson argues a very different approach saying that organizations face three challenges in making the most of their creative potential and human resources.

  • The first challenge is understanding the real nature of creativity, countering the many misconceptions that we may have that block progress.
  • The second is implementing a systemic strategy for developing individual capacities.
  • The third is that there must be a strategy to facilitate and reward creative output. We need to encourage and nurture our very process that’s meant to develop our natural abilities. What should this look like in education?"

What are you loving right now?

I love your photos of the lights. I have never seen a real hummingbird before you are so lucky.
I think everybody has the potential to be creative in their own way, it is how we define creative that may be limiting. People/children just need the right influences/encouragement and opportunities to allow that part of them to flourish

Oops forgot to tell you what I'm loving right now- I was able to sleep in a bit after a wonderful night with my girlfriends!! Love being in my sweats all day, curling up with Kelly at my feet, and the cup of hot cocoa Gary made.

I am loving that my kid wanted to make homemade candy canes yesterday...so we did. I am also loving the long talk we got to have about Picasso and Matisse (due to a silly book they have called Pigasso and Mootisse), what cubism is, and why we like some art and not others. Snow days are good for this kind of meandering and taking a long time with things. So maybe snow days should be called slow days.

Thanks everyone for visiting and your compliments!

I've really been loving the snow. I grew up in Alaska and am thrilled that Abbott and Cal have a chance to play in the snow.

The hummingbird is a bit of a mystery. We've seen it hovering by the garage almost every day this week. A couple of days ago Cal and Alexi heard a thumping noise and found it in our office on the first floor of our house, trying to get out. Maybe it's nesting in the rafters.

Patricia thank you for this poem - you are such an artist in every way.

Joyce: your day sounds divine - good for you!!

Anne: we can live vicariously through one another's blogs! I always love your sun shots especially those from Thanksgiving.

Susie you are so good with words. I love that - slow days. I'm going to have to check out that book. How about having us over and teaching us to make candy canes??

Diana: These were all taken with a canon 5D Mark II. For more about photography see the "photography information" label.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Lovely photos. And also, great to see that people, parents, educators are talking about Sir Ken's call for creativity.

I just love your photo of the snowy flip-flops and crocs...we're having a snowstorm in my neck of the woods today, and I'm totally loving it. Finally, a really snowy and white December, the way it's supposed to be in Minnesota! Also loving Christmas music more than usual this year, and the sound of my kids singing along to their favorites.

I love when it's cold outside and I'm warm inside with a glowing fire and music on. Doing anything in that environment is perfect for me.

Love! the hummingbird photo. I can't say that I've ever seen a photo let alone one is person sitting still.

Happy Holidays!
