Both Cal and Abbott's schools use the
second step curriculum. Here is an example of one way it is used in Cal's preschool classroom. Every day, the children are given a question to answer. This picture is from second step; the question is "how do you think Enrique is feeling?" This is great practice for this group of four year olds in many ways, including emotional awareness and writing.
Here are Julio and Jorge, the classroom pets who are asking the questions. These are
axolotls that were donated to the classroom by a parent who works in a research lab. (I think they're creepy and try not to look at them; the kids don't really seem to notice them one way or another.)

I think Enrgique is sad because he wants to take home the Axolotls and he knows that his Mother would not allow that as she is afraid of them, very afraid.

I was always sooo happy when the children had exotic pets in the classroom, which meant that we didn't NEED to have them at home!
They look happy to me! especially in that last pic, where he is absolutely smiling.
What a fun idea! I think the pets are slightly creepy but their little smiles save them. I'm glad they are not in my house.
How cute. I am going to ask my sister who is a teacher if her son has 2nd step in his school. Will have her stop by your post to see it.

Yech...I'm with you, they are creepy! I'm glad my girls are currently on a rabbit/guinea pig kick - which they just might get some day.
My self-calming cards arrived yesterday, and Gillian LOVES them! She even invented a tantrum last night (very transparent, that one) just to use the set, and then was very proud of herself for 'calming' down with her activity.
Great exercise, but I couldn't handle the axolotls. They send a shudder down my spine. The second one looks like he is missing his skin or something.Something furry and cuddly would sit better with me. LOL

Wow. Those strange animals are seriously gross---the sort of thing you'd see in a horror movie squirming from someone's mouth. No thank you!
But on the bright side, love the idea of teaching kids to me more aware of emotions at an early age...
I'm glad I'm not alone in my feelings about Julio and Jorge...I'm just glad they haven't given Cal nightmares!
