What Makes A Picture Interesting?

It can be our first look at something.

It can be entertaining.

It can evoke deep emotions.

It can be amusing or thrilling or intriguing.

It can be proof of something.

It can jog memories or raise questions.

It can be beautiful.

It can convey authority.

Most often it informs.

It can surprise.

This list of criteria is by John Loengard, a Time-Life photographer for over 40 years. He is an alumni of the same high school as Alexi; it was published in the school newsletter.

Yet another reminder that I really need to work on my pics. I used to be able to produce images that brought forth the type of emotion you did here today - but that went away with our transfer to digital for some reason. (Big sigh.) I'm starting to consider classes at a local camera store - or at the very least a long perusal through the photography section at the library!

PS. I'm going to email you soon with some kids knitting resources. I've been meaning to for days...

I am with KPiep. When I had my old, manual Cannon my pictures were so much better. I've taken a huge amount of photography classes, spent hundreds of hours in the darkroom and these days you would never know it.
I think I have to really study my camera, invest in a few new lens and take a good photoshop class...
Can't burn and dodge anymore!
And, I am such a sucker for little feet and hands or very old hands.

I love the feet pic. So cute!

I'm horrible at taking pictures. I just don't have any natural talent for it at all so I'm always appreciative when I'm around others with skill.

Lovely photos.
