St. Patrick's Day

A bit of green for my lovely friend Patricia on her St. Patrick's Day birthday: hellebore that grows in front of our house.

Music for the occasion, via Jamie:

Interesting reading about today's history:
St. Patrick Was A Slave

And a most excellent soda bread for the occasion:
Irish Soda Bread

Those are gorgeous pictures!

St. Pats is special in our house - my Grampa loved to celebrate his Irish heritage, and each year he and Mom would have a special party of their own. They expanded their celebration to include me when I hit middle school, and I always felt rather honored by that. (Meanwhile, the rest of the family just rolled their eyes every year.) The year before Grampa died, the three of us spent all day in the car to visit the wee town of St. Patrick, MO just to mail our cards from their post office!

The hellebores are beautiful — mine are just buds barely peeking out of the cold ground. You might enjoy Connie Drover's CD, "The Border of Heaven: Celtic Music on the American Frontier." She has a great voice and has excellent liner notes on the history of the songs, including "An Spailpin Fanach (The Girl I Left Behind Me)". It was Custer's second favorite song after "Garry Owen," and later became the official song of the Seventh Cavalry.
