The Sustainable Table

Eaters...must understand that eating takes place inescapably in the world, that it is inescapably an agricultural act, and that how we eat determines, to a considerable extent, how the world is used. - Wendell Berry

As this is Women's History Month with a theme of Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet, and as my church's Lenten theme this year is Sustainable Living, I want to mention a few resources you may find interesting. The first two websites are via John and Cathy - thank you!

The Sustainable Table - enter your zip code for restaurants, farmers markets, CSAs, co-ops and stores that support sustainable and local agriculture. The site has recipes, articles and other resources. Includes a list of what to look for that is in season in your region.

Local Harvest - a site for finding locally produced food.

100 Mile Diet - local eating tips and information.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. I read this last summer and it dramatically changed our family's shopping and eating habits.

The Farm to Table Cookbook: The Art of Eating Locally by Ivy Manning.

Food & Faith: Justice, Joy, and Daily Bread. Edited and compiled by Michael Schut.

That salad looks delicious! We shop the Farmer's Markets all summer and fall. This time of year-it's more challenging. All good links that I will check out. Thanks Lecia

Hello,
Found you from Suburban Matron. I love the veggie photos. I just planted veggies from seeds to grow inside our house. Will plant them after 4/15. Just asked my second grader about Flat Stanley. I was informed that he got flattened by a bulletin board. I hate when that happens!

That looks like a wonderful salad - yum! And I love the Local Harvest website, too, which is where I found the CSA we subscribed to a couple years ago. Now, though, I just walk or bike to the Farmer's Market near our house with the kids. I'm so excited for it to open up again, I can hardly stand it.

Great post. I like Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall http://www.rivercottage.net/ as he promotes eating local and in season alot here in the UK. He has seasonal recipes on the website and lots of other great information on just this kind of thing here.

I love this post! I'm a huge fan of buying locally grwon (granted hot so easy in NJ in the winter!) and organic. So...I love the Sustainable Table. And I'm happy to hear what you have to say about Animal, Vegetable, Miracle -- I bought it last month and it's the second book in my "to read" pile. Can't wait to dig in!
