Last week the second graders at our school held a market for parents and students, modeled after the Pike Place Market. Abbott has looked forward to being a second grader running the market since he first shopped at it in kindergarten. Produce and crafts (made by the second graders) are sold; buskers perform. The kids learn about economics and many other things in the process of preparing for and running a market. The proceeds will be given to the Pike Market Community (services include a medical clinic, senior center, foodbank, and preschool). I loved getting to be a part of it all.
When I was in elementary school, I was in the gifted program - Bright Ideas - and one of our favorite things to do each year was to visit Hallmark's fantastic Kaleidascope. Attached they had this really cool place where you could buy leftovers from all of their products for pennies...a treat for a kid. They also had a model city that they would bring kids into and let them run for the day. We ALWAYS wanted to do that, but for some reason our class didn't get to.
