One night at bedtime six or so months ago, Abbott asked me for three compliments and three suggestions about the day. I was taken aback by the question, but did my best to give thoughtful feedback. At his school there is a strong emphasis on communication. As an example, at the end of dress rehearsals for school plays the audience is always asked for compliments and then suggestions. I was quite impressed with Abbott's desire for and comfort with personal feedback. Since that first night he's had the same request almost every night without fail. I usually ask him the same question in return. It's a really nice way to end the day with him.

what a great way to end the day!

Your thoughts and opinions really matter to both your sons. What a great way to end the night for you and Abbott!
We play that game here at our house. My husband started it in order to encourage positive feelings amongst the two olders boys.
I think it goes back to how I was raised, my Mother always encouraged good communication. We were never allowed to say anything bad at all.
An attitude full of gratitude is what life is all about!
bravo to Abbott and to you, that is one big compliment.

what an incredible boy! that is a LOVELY way to end the day....
That's so great, so meaningful. Sounds like a very good school. I need to try to remember that when my son is a little older.
I think it's very good to have a time in the day when to think back and one's own day and behaviour. It must be a nice moment for the two of you to share.
What a lovely idea! And what brave souls you're raising!
Now that is a fantastic thing to do! I am going to implement that into some of my days. Thanks Abbott, your positive influence is infectious for such a young soul. xoxo
We often do "5 Things That Make You Special" with Gillian before bed. The little one hasn't quite hit that age where she needs it, but I'm sure it's coming soon. I do like the addition of the suggestions, though, and may have to add that!
I am a big fan of the boy's school! xoxo
your boys have the most amazing parents, who foster such a healthy sense of self and parent-child relationship. i am always inspired by it, lecia.
