Green Tuesday

Continuing on with the week of spring colors, it seems fitting today - green Tuesday - to tell you about a project Abbott's second grade class is working on. Each primary class at school is collecting as many of one item as possible to create a class art project of recyclable materials. Abbott's class is collecting plastic lids, after viewing recent artwork by Chris Jordan. Some of the images are graphic and disturbing, but do depict the horror of pollution. It is my hope that participation in this project will affect the way we all use plastic at home.

Here is a message by the photographer, Chris Jordan:

"These photographs of albatross chicks were made in September, 2009, on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking."
