around here

So, despite the complexities of packing, kids are infinitely easier to travel with as they get older. Case in point: we were in a traffic jam at one point on our trip such that it took about 90 minutes to travel 10 miles. It really wasn't a big deal: Cal played Rush Hour, Alexi and Abbott listened to a podcast about hockey and I read a book (wow was I happy to have one in my purse).

Abbott developed a headache Sunday night, and wondered if it might be due to having so much free time.

Yesterday I restocked our pantry (I had nothing to put in school lunches - I packed cheese and crackers and sandwich cookies, I kid you not), tended to the garden and sent out lots of orders for my shop (thank you!). We ate the first spinach of the year from our garden; I'd forgotten how incredibly good vegetables taste when you grow them yourself.

Something has eaten almost every bite of the basil (little holes in the leaves; not the whole leaf like a deer) - nothing else in the garden. Any advice? I'd really, really like to grow basil this summer.

Happy Tuesday to you!

Oh my, the kitties have grown, haven't they? Still adorable though.
And you've got rhubarb! Did you know the leaves were poisonous? I am always surprised when I read that.

Have a lovely week, Lecia!

Happy Tuesday!!

Traffic is hell!

So far basil and herbs in general are the only pest-free crops I've grown! I'm alarmed to learn that there are critters that have developed a taste for it!

I can hear the accordian music from here... you probably have an infestation of Italian Pesto Beetles ((smiles))

I suddenly feel a need to go dig out the rhubarb from my freezer and make a rhubarb cornmeal cake....

I can't wait until my kids are easier to travel with! Lucky you. And your basil--how sad! I hope you find the remedy soon. I would hate for you to go without.

My basil is getting eaten, too. And my tomatoes. I think I've got flea beetles. Are the holes tiny, or are the leaves just about all eaten away? If the former, it's probably flea beetles and I just bought some organic spray from the nursery that's supposed to help. If the latter, it's probably slugs and/or snails. You can do the whole beer in a pan thing, or you can try something I did this year: plant collars. I did a tutorial on it here: http://remarkablydomestic.com/2010/04/14/plant-collars-…ugs-and-snails/

LOVE that photo of the kitty.

Love your photos, especially the kitty!
sounds and looks like your garden is coming along- except for the basil...hmmmmm??? I don't know what could be eating it.

You're right, it does get easier to travel with kids as they get older - Charlie is 10, and if he has a good book to read, he's all set. Very nice, indeed!
Don't know about the basil, as I've only grown mine in pots and haven't had any issues with it. Good luck!

Life's better with upward trends.

I love eating things from the garden- I can't wait for ours to take off. Lecia have you found out about the holes in the leaves? I would be happy to ask my friend who happens to be a wonderful gardener. xo

I love the picture of the rhubarb! It's making me hungry for some strawberry rhubarb pie :).
