I'm still thinking about a conversation I had with one of the girls in my group on the way home from the field trip (kids really talk in the car). She told me how her grandfather had died of cancer before she was born, and how she wished she had known him. How much he'd liked her father, despite dying before her parents' wedding.
Late in the day Abbott panicked and then fled after his kitten managed to remove the collar given by the vet to prevent suture removal; he somehow imagined she would instantly die. Comfort and reassurance were provided.
The stack of paperwork and mountain of laundry and many other nagging things wanting my attention didn't get done.
All in all, it was a well spent day.

Sometimes, other more important things take over the best laid plans.
I've done some of my best listening in car pools to and from various events when the kids were little. Hard to keep from saying something isn't it? But if you do, it will be as though you are invisible.
I have a feeling we may be heading for new kittens in this house....the girls have been begging for pets of their own. I wonder if it would be better to get them before we lose my two geriatric pets, or to wait until after. No good answer.
Glad you had a good and fruitful day!!!
My good friend has the best perspective on life, as she is fighting her cancer each day, always with a smile, a witty remark and just the best attitude. I feel totally blessed to do, to visit and to just be her friend.
You know we have the same jacket and now I want those shoes....can you tell me about them?
pve
Love complete days like that! Hope day is just has full.
Whew, sometimes there is just so much living that has to be done in a day, you know?
I hope you guys had a good time away!
Out of the mouths of babes... What a sweet reflection from your little passenger.
For Abbott, so soon after Cinnamon's death and the death of his great grandmother, I am sure he was just devastated about his little kitten's collar removal.. poor little guy, their hearts are so tender. I hope he is doing better today. Give him an extra hug please, that piece of your blog just tore at my heart. xoxoxo
Some days are just like that, where we need to do more listening and reassuring, as opposed to "doing." You're wise for being able to pay attention like that, and letting the other stuff be just that...stuff that can wait to have your attention tomorrow.
I once had a conversation in the car with a 9 year old whose mother, and my best friend, had died, on how marriage is totally pointless. He had thought a great deal about it, and explained all his reasoning. I think the fact that I wasn't looking at him, but at the road, helped him talk. Love the green in your wardrobe.
I love those shoes! I need to wear more green. Such a happy color. :) xo
Ina: you are very insightful about Abbott. Thank you for your words of support.
Kristin: we struggled with that same question; we had 'reserved' our kittens and then Cinnamon #1 died before we got the kittens.
Sarah and everyone else who mentioned it: I don't tend to wear a lot of green; I found I felt surprisingly happy in it :)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has experienced the value of car time with children!
Patricia: your friend sounds like an inspiration. In terms of the shoes, they are cydwoq brand - my alltime favorite shoes! Always comfortable, good looking and unique. I buy them at a little shop in Seattle (Sole Food); I just found they do have a website. Here's a link to the shoe pictured on my blog:

Green isn't offered as a choice, but there is a button for 'special request' under color. Good luck!
I read every word but your awesome green shoes and jacket were very distracting. :)
