at the state fair

I believe every city dweller should visit their state fair. Aside from the sense of excitement and fun palpable from as far away as the parking lot, there is a whole side of life that is hard to see otherwise. One gets a good idea of where our food comes from and much of the culture surrounding it. I was quite impressed by the confidence and sense of capability I saw in the young people competing. We could have spent all day looking through barn after barn of every kind of animal. And then there are the foods and rides (!). On the way home the boys were already planning out next year's visit.

I just got back last night from the fair! It's so great. so wonderful. So worth sore feet, tired legs, loud noises, busy crowds- it is another world.

Ahh, so true, so true. I grew up with the Minnesota State Fair as THE highlight of each and every summer. The fantastic mix of farm kids, crummy carnival rides, every type of food imaginable on a stick, and sewing, baking, canning, whittling contests. There's nothing like it in Norway where I live now. It makes me a little more than nostalgic having to miss it every year now.

This is my first time visiting your blog. Besides the obviously gorgeous photography, I thing your blog name is great and am always happy to find family-focused blogs. I'll be sure to pop in again soon!

Our local fair is coming up in just a couple of weeks, and your experience just made me very excited for it. Some years I decide I don't really want to go and see everyone in town (it's a small place), but in the end I always end up going, even if just for old time's sake.

I always forget that the Puyallup isn't actually the state fair in Washington!

The second photo you posted of the cow, is gorgeous. What a satin beauty.

I can't even begin to express how much I love the state fair! (And I've never once been to the midway...) It was a treat when Mom and Grampa began including me in the anual trip (we always spent a lot of time in the cattle barns), and then a few years later we began showing rabbits at the fair. For several years I spent a week living - no kidding - in a cattle trailer behind the rabbit barn. Some of my best memories come from those days!
