the good stuff

My father in law arrived last night for a visit. Today, one of my friends asked him about our plans; wanted to know what he was looking forward to doing over the visit. His response was, being present for the everyday. Having time to do nothing together. That's when the good stuff happens, he said. And as I heard him quietly describing (I actually thought he was reading aloud at one point, his voice was so soft and continuous with story) encounters with raccoons and feeding birds out of his hand and animal tracks and other adventures of his life in Nova Scotia, I saw these little moments of 'nothing' acting as powerful glue.

That's what I like most of visiting my parents, days filled with special, little moments, the luxury of taking my time and not always having to do things. Your father in law's stories sound wonderful and I hope you all enjoy his visit.

Doing nothing together never happens often enough.

I wish our visits with all of our parents could be half so peaceful!
