Yesterday we took a day trip to Tacoma to visit the Museum of Glass. We discovered the downtown surrounding the museum is full of glass art; quite inspiring to see in so many public places including the UW library, Union Station, outdoors. Inside the museum we got to watch glass blowers at work in the 'hot room'. The favorite of the day was a room filled with pieces designed by children, 'kids design glass'. Photography wasn't allowed in the museum so the images here are of things we saw outside it and around downtown Tacoma. Well worth a trip if you're in the area.

Summer is winding down for us, in the achingly beautiful way it happens here in the Pacific Northwest. The light changes a bit every day; the mornings and evenings are crisp, the afternoons warm to hot. And I'm sensing a restlessness in the boys. School starts in just over a week, so we've begun setting an alarm and transitioning into school mode. This week we'll be squeezing in those last few activities we'd like to do before summer is over.

I hope you enjoyed the weekend was much as we did. We ended ours with a meal at one of our favorite restaurants, Delancey.

What are you up to this weekend? We're enjoying our last couple of days with our friends who are here visiting from Brooklyn, and have lots of fun things planned, including making s'mores on a beach.

We're wishing my Aunt Linda a very happy birthday today, and sending her all our love.

not as planned

I can still picture it - that unexpected, middle of the night trip to the hospital when I was a small child visiting my grandmother. The emotional trauma, the physical suffering, the medication I did not want. And oh, the tears. Internally I traveled back in time yesterday as one of our young guests had to make an unexpected visit to the hospital. All is well now, after a very long day for the family. I hope when she's older and looks back on this she remembers the time with friends and riding the ferry alongside her memory of physical pain, canceled plans and lost playtime.

on my mind

Throughout the day Jenna and I had conversations about the nature of creativity and art, and art for its own sake and its commodification. And as I watched our children play I thought to myself, I hope they're able to discover and do what they will love.
