what 5 o'clock looks like

Above: from the street, from the beach, from the dining room, from the deck, right around 5:00pm today.

Shortly after we moved to this neighborhood, four years ago almost to the day, a house on my running route proudly displayed a sign in the yard: ‘It’s A Girl!’ I’ve never met the family, or seen the girl whose birth was heralded out in the front yard; presumably they play behind the house. Last weekend, that house had pink balloons tied to its mailbox. No doubt, a birthday was happening, and the balloons were serving as a marker for which house to come to. The now limp, mostly deflated balloons were still hanging there this morning. Time passes. We grow older with our community.

Things I’m alone in the family in liking, which I eat with pleasure during the school day: Rye bread. Spicy food. Fennel.

Alexi is the only person I know who uses the word 'aplomb', and I've heard it from him more than once. I love that about him.

Happy Thursday. xo

I have a long list of foods that I like, and that my kids consider not edibles. :)

your photographs made my heart screams out loud (i am typing from the office desk right now - 3.32pm), they are really silky-smooth to be looked at, esp on a friday afternoon when i am 2 hrs away from knocking off :) always love your pictures and words. Lecia, if you ever write a book, i will surely purchase it :) your words are calm. always.

5:00 is such a magical time, isn't it!

My husband uses some rare and handy words as well, and I do love that about him. Another thing we have in common!

The shot of Rainier with the city lights at the base is very nice. I like how crisp the lights are on Harbor Island. And it's always a treat when the mountain is out.

It looks as if everything paused and let out a long deep sigh of calm.

We live in OR and the sunny clear days we're having right now are pure bliss...such a great reprieve. I ended a run shortly after 5:00 yesterday and saw similar colors in the sky. Seattle is especially lovely. Thanks for sharing.

The light is so beautiful this time of year. Your photos capture it beautifully. We get the same amazing colors here in Fairbanks, only it is around 3:30!

I will join you any day for rye bread, spicy food, or fennel, hopefully in your neighborhood, at 5:00.

BEAUTIFUL photographs!

I have driven the same 87-kilometre route to work for the past 16 years. One day a few years ago, it struck me as I noticed three teenagers - two boys and a girl - waiting at the end of their laneway for the schoolbus, "Oh my goodness - I remember when those boys were just little, and the little girl would be holding her mom's hand at the end of the laneway, waiting for her brothers to get on the bus. And now they're all so big and tall!" I was shocked at how quickly time passes, almost without us noticing. Children are such good reminders for this ;)
