November 11

The boys and I got flu vaccines today. After checking in at the clinic the nurse advised us, “We only have two doses of flu mist left. One of you will need to have an injection, or come back when we have more of the mist.” Cal immediately spoke up. “I’ll have the shot.” In the instant I recovered from my surprise - before I had a chance to say that, of course, the boys would have the remaining doses of the mist - Abbott murmured, “I could have the shot.” After a quick inward debate about whether to come back later for the nasal spray I looked at their commiserate faces and rolled up my sleeve, my dread disappearing as mist in a sunrise.
