Emergen Research’s U.S. home decor furnishing estimate also places furniture at about 55% of the market in 2024, while the residential segment represented about 70%. The two furniture figures are close, but the sources use different market labels and should not be treated as a single independently harmonized measurement. Channel and category growth add more context. Market Data Forecast estimated that home improvement and furniture stores held 56.8% of the U.S. home decor market in 2025. The same outlook projects the U.S. home textiles segment to grow at a 6.8% CAGR from 2026 to 2034. The channel share is a 2025 estimate, while the textiles figure is a later forecast period. Taken together, the figures point to a category centered on furniture and residential demand, while also leaving room for textiles, improvement projects, and other decorative purchases. Because the reported shares refer to different research frameworks, they are best used as directional indicators.

The U.S. retail establishment base

The Census County Business Patterns data counted 44,942 employer establishments in furniture and home furnishings stores in 2023. Within that total, furniture stores accounted for 21,964 establishments, and home furnishings stores accounted for 22,978. Floor covering stores added 9,723 establishments. Census CBP 2023

Furniture and home furnishings stores recorded $17,611,091 thousand in annual payroll in 2023. The sector also reported $129,800,771 in employer and nonemployer sales, value of shipments, or revenue in the 2023 Annual Integrated Economic Survey and Nonemployer Statistics data. These measures have different scopes, so payroll should not be subtracted from the sales or revenue figure as an implied profit calculation. Census CBP 2023; Census AIES/NES 2023

The establishment counts show how heavily the industry is weighted toward smaller operators. In 2023, furniture and home furnishings stores included:

  • 23,414 establishments with fewer than five employees.
  • 10,926 establishments with five to nine employees.
  • 6,141 establishments with 10 to 19 employees.
  • 3,461 establishments with 20 to 49 employees.
  • 778 establishments with 50 to 99 employees.
  • 145 establishments with 100 to 249 employees.
  • 61 establishments with 250 to 499 employees.
  • 13 establishments with 500 to 999 employees.
  • 3 establishments with 1,000 or more employees.

The same Census data counted 5,834 home center employer establishments in 2023. That separate category helps show the scale of home improvement retail alongside dedicated furniture and furnishings stores. Census CBP 2023
